Pelvic (transvaginal) ultrasound

A pelvic ultrasound scan looks at your uterus, fallopian tubes, cervix and ovaries in detail. They are used when there is irregular bleeding, irregular periods, post menopausal bleeding, pelvic pain, abdominal bloating, heavy periods and infertility.

We can use a pelvic ultrasound to check for growths such as ovarian cysts and fibroids, polycystic ovaries, to look for the correct placement of a coil and also investigate reasons for pain, vaginal bleeding and menstrual problems.

For fertility scans we ask that you are between day 2-5 of your menstrual cycle so that we are able to accurately calculate your antral follicle count (this is number of follicles in your ovaries) which can predict egg reserve and how you would react to fertility treatment. We also look for structural abnormalities and ovarian cysts.

We scan using our state of the art Samsung ultrasound machine.

Our scans are affordable starting from £175 and range from general pelvic, fibroid mapping and fertility ultrasound scans.

They are performed by our female specialist womens imaging consultant radiologist, Dr Anika Morjaria.

We also have other general and MSK ultrasound scans available with our consultant radiologist. To view what we offer and pricing, please click here.

Dr Anika Morjaria, our consultant radiologist, is also recognised by the following insurers: WPA, AXA, AVIVA and Vitality. Please let us know if you are booking via your insurer or self-paying. It is also advised that you discuss with your insurer if you able to self refer for an ultrasound scan.

The pelvic ultrasound has two parts an over the tummy scan which is called a transabdominal pelvic ultrasound which requires you have a full bladder. Then we get you to empty your bladder and an internal (transvaginal) scan will be performed. There will be a probe cover and lubricating sterile gel on the probe for sanitation and comfort. There maybe some sight pressure on insertion and maybe some gentle discomfort when we look at the ovaries, as they can be off to the side.

We have a full in depth educational video outlining what patients need to know about a transvaginal ultrasound on this page.

There is also more information on pelvic ultrasound and the conditions we see during the scan on our instagram page @a_nmedservices.
